Contro il nulla

Notizie

Benvenuti e buona visione.

Not long ago I read these lines:

“These are times of retrogression in the spiritual world (…) During these dumb, blind periods men lay special and exclusive stress on outward success. They are only interested in material possessions and welcome any technical advancement (…) as an achievement of major magnitude, while spiritual forces are neglected, if not completely ignored. The solitary seekers, the hungry of soul, the visionaries are derided or dubbed as spiritually abnormal.”

Does this sound familiar? Don’t you agree that this describes perfectly our battered world?
Actually this was written by Wassily Kandinsky in “Concerning the Spiritual in Art”, 1910.

In every period there has been someone who denounced this irreducible contrast with the reality around us.
From the time of Ancient Greeks and Romans to today, philosophers, artists, mystics, writers, rebels speak about this tension between soul and matter which, in my opinion, is an opposition between our natural spirituality and the society we are living in, between our deep inclinations and the cage of rules and conventions. It is not a matter of being an outsider or a conformist, rather about not kill the child within us, as Giovanni Pascoli suggested. It is a matter of not disowning the dreamer who we once were as a boy or a girl only to become indifferent, insensitive, bitter, selfish, cynical, frustrated, and intolerant as an adult.

This is a serious and vital matter! Here we are talking about imagination against ignorance, joy against meanness, life against necrosis, that is the eternal struggle between good and evil, Fantasia and the Nothing. I hope you remember “The Neverending Story”, it was the 80s. What Gmork said to Atreyu was eye-opening: “People have begun to lose their hopes and forget their dreams. So the Nothing grows stronger. (…) People who have no hopes are easy to control.” The Nothing grows stronger indeed, my dear. It grows stronger through TV shows, social media, politicians, football matches, and double-parked SUVs. Each and every one of us is involved in this struggle and has got the means to stop the Nothing. Pencils are mine. These artworks I’m sharing with you are my head in the clouds, my feet in the air, the boy who doesn’t grow up, my daydreams. They represent my persistence to nurture the poetry in the daily existence, the extraordinary in the ordinary.

Welcome and enjoy the show.
